Privacy Policy
Version 2026-10-22 · Effective 22 October 2026
This policy covers the Set The Bar app. The website and its waitlist are covered by the waitlist privacy notice and the cookie notice.
This policy explains what personal data Set The Bar collects, why, what we do with it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your rights. We've tried to write it plainly. If anything is unclear, contact us at support@yousetthebar.com.
Who we are
Set The Bar is run by Michael Coen, a sole trader in Ireland trading as Set The Bar, of Lavally, Ballintogher, Co. Sligo, F91 Y1Y5, Ireland. We are the "controller" of your personal data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and, for users in Northern Ireland, the UK GDPR.
Privacy contact: support@yousetthebar.com.
The short version
- You need to be 16 or over. We check your date of birth and keep only the year.
- We use your location when you check in at a spot, and to list the parks closest to you, only if you allow it. We don't track you, and we don't store your coordinates.
- The camera counts your reps on your phone, and the video never leaves it. Each set's result (the count, any no reps and when you did it) is saved to your History, which only you can see. Once Compete sets can be submitted for the boards (coming soon), only their videos are uploaded, and they're seen only by you and our moderators.
- Your check-ins are private unless you choose otherwise, and your public activity is delayed by 2 hours by default.
- Analytics, crash reports and marketing are off unless you switch them on.
- We never sell your data, and there's no advertising in the app.
- If you subscribe to Set The Bar Pro, you pay Apple through the App Store. We never see your card, only which plan you're on and until when. Pro can save a video of your set to your own Photos; it stays on your phone.
- You can get a copy of your data or delete your account at any time. Email us for now; buttons for both are coming to the app.
What we collect and why
Some features described here are still coming to the app: submitting Compete sets for the boards, follows and kudos, reporting and blocking, notifications, App Attest, and analytics and crash reports. Until a feature arrives, the app collects nothing for it, and we'll update this policy before anything about it changes.
Your account
| Data | Why we use it | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Email address, or the identifier Apple gives us if you use Sign in with Apple | To sign you in (with a 6-digit code by email, or with Apple) and to contact you about your account | Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)) |
| Handle, display name, bio | To show your profile, who's training at a spot, and the boards | Contract |
| Year of birth | To confirm you're 16 or over, and to place you in age-group boards | Contract; legal obligation regarding the age of digital consent (Art. 6(1)(c), Data Protection Act 2018 s.31) |
| Gender (optional) | Only to place you on the Women's or Men's boards | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): you can remove it at any time |
| Time zone, taken from your phone | To show times correctly and respect quiet hours for notifications | Contract |
| Your privacy settings and consent choices | To apply them, and to prove what you agreed to and when | Contract; legal obligation (Art. 7(1)) |
| Set The Bar Pro, if you subscribe: the plan, when it started, when it renews or ends, whether you're in the free month, whether it will renew, refunds, and Apple's transaction id for it | To give you Pro, and to keep it in step with the App Store: Apple tells us about each renewal, expiry and refund | Contract |
When you enter your date of birth, we use it once to check your age and then discard it. We keep only the year. If you're under 16, we keep nothing you entered and delete the sign-in we created.
Location
| When | What happens | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| You check in at a spot | Your phone sends its position once. We check that you're within 75 m of the spot, then keep only how far away you were and how accurate the phone's fix was, never the coordinates | Contract; legitimate interests in fair boards (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
| You open the map, the boards or Log | If you've allowed location, your phone sends its position once to list the parks closest to you. It's used for that one search and not stored | Contract |
| You add a spot and tap "Use my location" | Your position becomes the spot's pin, which you can move before sending | Contract |
The app asks for location only while you're using it, never in the background.
Training, spots and the boards
| Data | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Check-ins (which spot, when, your visibility choice) | To show who's training at a spot, if you choose to share that, and the spots you've trained at in Your spots | Contract |
| The camera picture and the positions of your joints (body pose) while you log a set | To count your reps. This happens on your phone, frame by frame, and none of it is kept, unless you have Set The Bar Pro and turn on Save a video to Photos: then the set's video, with the count and the lines drawn on, is saved to your own Photos. It stays on your phone, and we never receive it. To find the bar, the app also looks at one small black-and-white picture of the camera view, on your phone, and doesn't keep it | Contract |
| Compete sets you submit: the video, the count and when and where it was recorded | To verify the set before it goes on a board: our server counts the reps again from the video, with the same rules, and checks it hasn't been edited | Contract; legitimate interests in fair boards |
| Your History: each set's result (the exercise, the count, any no reps and why, how long the set took, Practice or Compete, and the park if you were checked in). Never the video or your body pose | To show you your sets, your personal bests and this week's totals | Contract |
| Spots you add, edits you suggest, and spot photos | To build the map of outdoor bars | Contract |
| Follows, kudos, blocks and reports | For the social features and to keep the community safe | Contract; legitimate interests in safety |
Body data is used only to count reps and, with Set The Bar Pro, to give you form tips after a set, worked out on your phone. We never use it, or your videos, to identify you, and we don't use face recognition.
Spot photos are cleaned twice. Your phone removes the location and camera details and shrinks the photo before it's uploaded, and our server re-encodes it again. A photo is checked automatically for inappropriate content, or by a person, before anyone else sees it.
Automated checks on Compete sets. When you submit a Compete set, our systems check it automatically and may ask an AI service to review the video. A set can be rejected, or held for a person to review. A rejected set doesn't otherwise affect your account. You can ask for a person to review any decision on your set by contacting us.
Your device
| Data | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| App Attest result (a check from Apple that requests come from the genuine app on a real device) | To stop cheating with modified apps | Legitimate interests in fair boards |
| Push notification token | To send the notifications you've allowed | Consent (given in your phone's settings) |
| IP address | To protect the service from abuse; kept for about a day | Legitimate interests in security |
Optional, and off unless you switch them on
| Data | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Product analytics (which screens are used) | To understand what to improve | Consent |
| Crash reports with your account identifier | To fix crashes and follow up with you | Consent |
| Marketing emails and notifications | News about features and events | Consent |
Who can see what
- Everyone signed in can see your handle, display name, bio and when you joined, and your verified results on the boards.
- Your check-ins are visible to whoever you choose: only you (the default), your followers, or everyone. Only check-ins shared with everyone and with no delay appear in a spot's "Training here now", with your handle and name.
- Your activity appears to others after the delay you choose (2 hours by default).
- Spots and photos you add are shown to everyone once approved, including people who aren't signed in. The app doesn't show who added them.
- Your History (your sets, bests and totals) is seen only by you. Compete results will appear on a park's boards once they're verified (coming soon).
- Your videos are seen only by you, and by our moderators when a set is reviewed or reported.
- Your year of birth, gender, time zone and settings are seen only by you. Being on the Women's or Men's board shows which one you chose.
Who processes your data for us
We use these service providers, each under a contract that requires them to protect your data and use it only on our instructions:
| Provider | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in, file storage, server functions | Ireland (EU) |
| Google Cloud | Website hosting; verification of Compete sets, photo screening, and AI review of sets (Gemini on Vertex AI) | EU |
| Mailjet (Sinch) | Sending sign-in codes and other emails | EU |
| Cloudflare | Our domain's name servers, and forwarding emails you send us | EU and elsewhere |
| Google (Gmail) | The inbox where emails you send us arrive | EU and elsewhere |
| Sentry (only if you allow crash reports) | Crash reports | EU (Germany) |
| PostHog (only if you allow analytics) | Product analytics | EU (Germany) |
Apple provides Sign in with Apple, notifications, App Attest and the maps in the app (including Look Around and directions). For the maps, Apple handles your requests under its own privacy policy. For Set The Bar Pro, Apple sells the subscription through the App Store and takes the payment under its own privacy policy. It sends us only the subscription details listed above.
Some of these providers are part of groups based outside the EU. Where data could be accessed from outside the EU or UK, we rely on the European Commission's adequacy decisions (including the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or Standard Contractual Clauses.
The AI service used to review sets processes videos under terms that don't allow the video to be used to train its models.
Spot locations partly come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Some spots were placed with the help of Mapillary street-level imagery (CC BY-SA 4.0).

Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access your data, and get a copy: email support@yousetthebar.com. A Download my data button is coming to You → Settings and privacy.
- Correct it: edit your profile in the app, or contact us.
- Delete it: email support@yousetthebar.com, or, once it arrives, use You → Settings and privacy → Delete my account. This removes your account, profile, sets, videos, photos and everything else, except where we must keep something by law. Spots you added stay on the map, no longer linked to you.
- Restrict or object to how we use it, including our legitimate interests.
- Take it with you in a machine-readable format (the download is JSON).
- Withdraw consent at any time, as easily as you gave it, in Settings and privacy. This doesn't affect what we did before.
To exercise any right, use the app or email support@yousetthebar.com. We'll reply within one month.
You can complain to the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie). If you're in Northern Ireland, you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). We'd appreciate the chance to deal with your concern first.
Children
The app is for people aged 16 and over. If you're under 16, you can't create an account, and we don't keep anything you entered while trying. If you believe someone under 16 has an account, tell us and we'll delete it.
Security
Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access to each person's private data is enforced in the database itself, not just in the app, and every change to our systems is tested for it. Sign-in sessions are stored in your phone's Keychain.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect, and ask you to accept it where the law requires.
